VetAgro Sup and technological platforms

The conduct of both applied and basic research leads VetAgro Sup to develop relationships with a lot of external partners: institutional, academics (CNRS, INRA, INSERM…) and industrials.

That way, VetAgro Sup encouraged the creation of technological platforms whose aim is triple:

  • Bring a support to the school research activities, and then developing skills and expertise
  • Bring a support to teaching activities (implementation of tutorial classes inside the platform, ongoing training)
  • Offer services (expertise, testing, analysis) to companies and external partners. It allows economic valorization of expertise

List of technological platforms

Hospital Center of Veterinary Education (CHEV)

Contact :
+33 (0)4 78 87 26 70 / secretariat.chevac@vetagro-sup.fr

Through this clinic, the CHEV provides training for students as part of the core curriculum, but also for interns and residents as part of the training.

The CHEV is also the location of clinical research activities. In certified research units of the veterinary campus, 50% of executive scientists develop a scientific questioning. This scientific questioning is partially supported by spontaneous pathologies cases collected in clinical departments of VetAgro Sup. The collection of spontaneous cases aims to expand medical progress for both humans and animals. The most important themes concern locomotor traumatology in carnivores and horses, oncology in domestic carnivores, septic shock in pets, pain and welfare management in domestic animals.

The CHEV is divided into:

  • The pet clinic (Chevac)
  • The production animal clinic (Chevpa)
  • The horse clinic (Cheveq or Clin’quine)

The imaging unit is shared between the clinics and ensures the imagery in different areas of activities.
The department of anesthesia is shared too.
The pharmacy is central with branches in different sectors.
The hematology and cytology laboratory is communal to horses and carnivores.

The pet clinic (operating 24 hours a day, 11 months out of the year)

The various disciplines taught and practiced are:

  • Medical pathology, internal and specialized medicine (dermatology, ophthalmology, neurology, cardiology, oncology = those for which a specialist’s college at European level exist)
  • Surgery
  • Anesthesia
  • Reproductive pathology
  • Preventive medicine
  • Emergencies, intensive cares and reanimation

The production animal clinic (operating 24 hours a day, all year round)

It is divided into:

  • Cattle and small ruminants hospitals
  • The Arbresle Rural Clinic Unit (UCRA), which operates for a private rural clientele, with practitioners who intervene in animal husbandry (medicine, surgery, prophylaxis) but accompanied by students.

Horse clinic (operating 24 hours a day, all year round)

The disciplines taught and practiced are:

  • Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Anesthesia
  • Hospitals
  • Ambulatory medicine

Care are given on site but also on an ambulatory basis at private households, on racetracks or riding competitions.

Number of cases:
Horses: 1000 horses treated within a year
Carnivores: 12 000 animals treated each year

Production animals: 280 customer’s animal husbandries from some animals to a few dozen (with an average of 40 animals). 15 animal husbandries with herd monitoring and care contract.

Laboratory of medical biology

Contact : 04.78.44.24.11

This laboratory provides throughout the year endocrinological, biochemical, hematological and cytological analysis. Those analysis are intended for:

  • The CHEV: for which it carries out biochemical and endocrinological analysis for carnivorous pets (dog, cat, ferret) and horses, hematological analysis (horses throughout the year and carnivorous pets when the hematological laboratory is closed) and cytological analysis (horses throughout the year and carnivorous pets for all cytology and cerebrospinal fluid analysis when the hematological laboratory is closed)
  • External veterinary clinics: for which it carries out biochemical, endocrinological and hematological analysis for all species.
  • The CERREC for the dosing of sexual hormones. The CERREC’s staff has a 24 hour access to this technological platform
  • 7 days a week at the endocrinological automat in order to ensure effective endocrinological follow-up every days of the week.

The BEMR technological platform, through its clinical biology diagnosis activities, has two essential missions: a pedagogical mission for VetAgro Sup’s students and practicing veterinarians. A mission of service provision, through its biochemical, endocrinological, hematological and cytological analysis for the clinics of the veterinary campus but also for private clinics.
